If you are planning a luxury mountain wedding in Colorado, a Sonnenalp Vail wedding is hard to beat. Located in the heart of Vail Village, the Sonnenalp Hotel combines upscale European charm with the relaxed atmosphere that makes Vail so special. As a Vail wedding photographer who has photographed multiple weddings at the Sonnenalp, it is one of my favorite venues in Colorado for couples wanting a wedding that feels elegant, welcoming, and deeply connected to the mountains.
Lauren and Jason’s wedding day perfectly captured everything that makes the Sonnenalp such an incredible place to get married. Their ceremony took place at the beautiful Vail Chapel, followed by cocktail hour and a reception at the Sonnenalp Hotel in Vail Village. The entire day felt timeless, family centered, and thoughtfully designed while still allowing the beauty of Vail to shine through naturally.

Why Couples Love Having a Sonnenalp Vail Wedding
One of the best things about the Sonnenalp is its location right in the center of Vail Village. Guests can walk to restaurants, coffee shops, bars, shopping, and scenic areas throughout the village without needing transportation throughout the weekend. It creates an experience that feels immersive and relaxing for everyone attending.
The Sonnenalp also offers a unique mix of luxury and warmth. While the property feels upscale and refined, it never feels overly formal or disconnected from the mountain setting. The hotel’s architecture, cozy interiors, and beautiful reception spaces photograph incredibly well year-round.
Lauren and Jason leaned into that classic mountain elegance with a wedding palette of white, green, and soft blue. Their reception design included candlelight, layered greenery, soft white florals, and long wooden tables that perfectly complemented the warmth of the Sonnenalp’s glass atrium reception space.
Getting Ready in Vail
One detail that made Lauren and Jason’s wedding feel especially personal was that both sides of the wedding party got ready at their family’s cabin in Vail. The relaxed atmosphere of the morning gave everyone time to slow down and fully enjoy the day together before heading into Vail Village.
Lauren wore a timeless strapless gown with subtle floral texture woven throughout the fabric. She paired the look with heirloom family jewelry, including earrings and a bracelet that added sentimental meaning to her bridal style. Jason wore a classic tuxedo with a velvet navy dinner jacket and cufflinks from The Golden Bear in Vail, tying another meaningful detail back to the location.
Before the ceremony, the couple exchanged gifts privately. Lauren surprised Jason with a Rolex, and Jason gifted Lauren a pair of diamond earrings that she wore during the wedding day.
Ceremony at Vail Chapel
Lauren and Jason chose to hold their ceremony at the iconic Vail Interfaith Chapel, one of the most popular ceremony locations in Vail. The chapel is beautiful in every season and offers a classic mountain setting without needing extensive decor.
Their ceremony felt incredibly personal and emotional. Jason’s father officiated the wedding, while Jason’s mother and sister both shared readings during the ceremony. One of the most memorable parts of the day was the live piano music performed by the groom’s cousin, a Grammy Award winner recognized for the K-pop song “Golden.” Having live music from a close family member made the ceremony and cocktail hour feel even more meaningful.
After the ceremony, Lauren and Jason shared a quiet first look moment along Gore Creek in Vail Village before joining guests for cocktail hour at the Sonnenalp.
Cocktail Hour and Reception at the Sonnenalp Hotel
Cocktail hour took place at the Sonnenalp and flowed naturally into the reception space inside the hotel’s stunning glass atrium. Guests also spent time gathering in the King’s Club bar at the Sonnenalp, which added cozy alpine charm to the evening and gave the wedding a distinctly Vail atmosphere.
The reception design stayed clean, classic, and timeless. White roses, baby’s breath, candlelight, and greenery filled the space without overpowering it. One especially meaningful detail was wrapped around Lauren’s bouquet: a piece of Jason’s mother’s wedding dress.
Later in the evening, guests were surprised with an espresso martini bar that quickly became one of the highlights of the night and kept the dance floor full.
Their wedding cake matched the overall aesthetic perfectly with soft white florals, textured icing, and a timeless design that complemented the elegance of the reception space.
Best Time of Year for a Sonnenalp Vail Wedding
The Sonnenalp photographs beautifully year-round, but my favorite seasons for weddings there are late June through early October and mid-December for winter weddings.
Summer and early fall weddings offer green mountain views, mild temperatures, and easy access to outdoor portrait locations throughout Vail Village. Fall brings beautiful aspen color, especially in late September.
Winter weddings at the Sonnenalp are equally beautiful if you want a cozy alpine atmosphere with snow-covered mountains and holiday lights throughout Vail Village.

Tips for Lodging at the Sonnenalp
One of the biggest advantages of getting married at the Sonnenalp is being able to host guests on-site. The hotel rooms feel luxurious while still maintaining the cozy mountain atmosphere Vail is known for.
I always recommend couples encourage guests to stay within walking distance of Vail Village whenever possible. It makes the entire weekend feel more connected and allows guests to fully experience the town without worrying about transportation.
For couples planning a wedding weekend, I also recommend building in downtime so guests can enjoy Vail. Some favorite activities include:
- Walking through Vail Village
- Dining at local restaurants
- Visiting Gore Creek
- Taking the gondola for mountain views
- Shopping throughout the village
- Relaxing at the Sonnenalp spa

As a Vail wedding photographer, I am very familiar with photographing weddings at the Sonnenalp and throughout Vail Village in every season. Knowing the lighting, portrait locations, weather patterns, and venue flow helps couples feel relaxed and fully present throughout the day.
