About the proposal\

When I first started talking to Spencer Steer about his proposal to his soon to be fiance Jen, it was a joy to feel the nerves and excitement right through the phone. Jen had been planning a trip to Vail, Colorado with her friends and Spencer thought this was a perfect opportunity to catch a flight to Denver and drive into the mountains to surprise her.  Spencer is a baseball player for the Cincinnati Reds, so his schedule is crazy, and she didn't suspect a thing. I worked with Spencer and Jen's sister to plan the whole thing out, including timing, location and calmed his nerves as the plans came to fruition. Spencer and Jen met in college at Oregon State, and the rest is history. They both agreed "It was always you". Spencer and I met up and finally got to the location where we decided to hide him a little bit, and I just pretended I was a stranger, which works almost every time ;). Spencer waited just over the hill for Jen to come running with a very surprised face.  He got down on one knee, and she said yes! Sealing their love with a kiss and several hugs, we then went around the village and took some pictures.

Why Propose at Solaris Plaza in Vail?

Solaris Plaza is one Vail's most popular spots...and it’s easy to see why. It offers:

  • A beautiful winter backdrop, especially in December through March
  • A public yet intimate setting surrounded by lights and alpine architecture
  • An ice rink for skating or just a unique photo element
  • Views of the Gore Range and nearby ski slopes
  • Nearby restaurants and bars perfect for celebrating after

It’s a location that feels elevated but still accessible, with enough flexibility to create a personalized experience. Note: Solaris Plaza is nearly always busy.

How to Plan a Proposal at Solaris Plaza

Thinking about proposing in Vail Village like Spencer did? Here are a few tips to make it go smoothly:

1. Choose the Best Time: Late morning and golden hour (before sunset) offer the best light. Holiday season evenings are especially magical, but busier—so timing is key.

2. Pick a Spot That Works for Your Style: I’ll help you choose based on crowd flow, lighting, and the vibe you want.

3. Keep It a Surprise: If you want to surprise your partner (like Spencer did), I’ll help you set the scene without drawing attention. I can blend in or stay at a distance with a zoom lens until the moment happens.

4. Add a Personal Touch: From custom messages to post-proposal champagne or dinner, there are easy ways to elevate the experience. Spencer had family waiting close by to celebrate right after, which made it even more special.

A moment like this deserves to be captured the right way. Proposals happen fast, and a public space like Solaris has a lot going on. I’ll help you plan around those variables and make sure we get clean, emotional shots you’ll be proud to share.

What I include:

  • Pre-proposal planning and timeline help
  • Location scouting and backup plans
  • Candid proposal coverage + a short engagement session right after
  • High-resolution images delivered in a timely gallery

FAQ: Planning a Proposal in Vail Village at Solaris Plaza

Do I need a reservation to propose at Solaris Plaza?

Not for the plaza itself. But if you want a custom jumbotron message, private rink time, or a dinner reservation, those will need to be booked ahead of time, especially during ski season.

Can I propose during a public skate session?

Yes, you can! Just be sure to pick a time when the rink isn’t packed, and have a plan for getting your partner to the right spot. You can also propose next to the rink if you want a snowy backdrop without skating.

Can we include friends or family in the proposal?

Absolutely. Spencer had family quietly waiting nearby, and it made the moment even more emotional. I’ll help you coordinate their positions so the surprise isn’t blown.

Do you offer photo and video?

I offer proposal photography with the option to add video clips or collaborate with a videographer. It all depends on the style and coverage you want.

What happens after the proposal?

Many couples do a short engagement session right after the proposal, either in Vail Village or on a nearby trail. You can also plan a celebration dinner, many top restaurants are just steps away from Solaris.
